New Zealand is a young, bicultural nation that offers a unique opportunity to study anthropology in an island nation where two cultures have combined, each influencing the other, yet retaining their individual essence. Maori and European New Zealanders have been joined by a melting pot of other cultural influences in more recent years.
Our program begins by examining the historical context of both cultures in New Zealand. We examine what happened with the merging of the two cultures, we look at the bicultural issues, and immerse you in contemporary New Zealand culture. We start with theoretical lectures and move quickly into field visits and hands-on experience.
Highlights include in-depth interaction with the indigenous Maori culture, starting with a formal welcome and including on-going informal contact. There is then the chance to contrast different tribal areas with an experience of Maori cultural tourism in Rotorua, the birthplace of NZ tourism. During the program you have the chance to explore some iconic experiences that have become part of modern ‘kiwi’ identity, including time in one of New Zealand’s favorite coastal beach holiday destinations, jet boat rides, and rural farming lifestyle. You will get to feel New Zealanders’ love for the outdoors and ‘can do’ attitude as you meet these warm laid-back people. We will look at how the two main cultures in New Zealand approach environmental management, and the way Maori culture has been encompassed into resource management law. And no trip to New Zealand would be complete without spending time in geothermal areas, where volcanism and tourism have merged, especially for Maori.
Kuaka run study tours for groups of 10 or more, and are able to tailor this program to suit your specific educational outcomes. We provide study materials and help with marketing on request.
